Charset Finder by AndyF

A simple Basic program to assist you to find character sets.

Load your game and return to Basic, then load in the charset program.

It may be necessary if space is tight to issue a CLEAR 26000 before however not many games appear to keep their character sets so low down in ram so it is not too likely to be an issue.

Once it is running, you'll see the character set (default) along with the memory contents for the selected area. This is in inverse purposely as it is easier this way to ensure you get the vertical alignment correct. Also displayed are the address location, the appropriate Save code for the charset you are viewing as well as the current values of 23606 and 23607 needed to display it.

You can use the following keys to navigate through:

Q = Step back (down) one byte

W = Step forward (up) one byte

O = Step back (down) eight bytes

P = Step forward (up) eight bytes

Z = Step back (down) sixty-four bytes

X = Step forward (up) sixty-four bytes

N = Step back (down) two hundred and fify-six bytes

P = Step forward (up) two hundred and fifty-six bytes

G = Jump to the start, ie the Rom character set 15360

H = Jump to the end, ie 64767

0 = Cycle through background colours

Space = Stop

If at any time you stop the program and the charset listing is corrupted simply issue a RUN 9999 to restore the defaults, however this should not occur in most cases if you BREAK anyway.

Also included are some screenshot's of various charsets on display in various games.

Note some games may have compressed sets which are not terribly usable as they are (you'll see these as they have very little if any vertical space between the lettering making them difficult to line up) and not all games will have a complete set, hence the reason for including both upper and lower case in the display. Some may even just have one case or the other but most will have some numerics so you should be able to correctly line up the set prior to its extraction.

Enjoy!
