CUP MANAGER

Cup Manager is the sequel to our highly successful football management game "The Manager",

extending the options available by enhancing the game-play, and giving players the opportunity

to try their skills in the exciting sudden-death cup competition. Cup Manager can be played and

enjoyed without ownership of The Manager, but we suggest that it is even more fun if you play

with a team that you have built from the other game.

The object of Cup Manager is quite simple - to win the cup! Your team starts as a qualifier in

the 3rd round, and must beat opposition from the best in the First division to the Giant killers

of the lower divisions and non-league.

PLAYING THE GAME

The two main menus are controlled by pressing the space bar to change the highlighted option,

and ENTER to select.

On loading the game you will be asked to choose a difficulty level - we strongly suggest you

start with easy (1)! If you are loading a team from The Manager, the computer will over-ride

this, and will automatically play at level 9. It assumes you have a good team and know what

you are doing!

LOAD TEAM Because Cup Manager is a relatively short game, there is no save game option, but as

mentioned before, you are able to load a team from our other game "The Manager". Only select

this option if you have a saved team on tape ready to load. It will load in all the player

characteristics necessary to play the game.

SQUAD takes you to look at the players you have available; more of this later.

PLAY takes you to the match. Prepare your team first.

STATS shows statistics for your current team in the cup so far.

SQUAD SCREEN This screen shows the team currently picked; their names (which can be changed if

you don’t like them), playing position, (Goalkeeper, Defender, Midfielder, Attacker), age (AG),

skill (SK), and fitness (F). Age does not affect performance within the game as it does in The

Manager, as the cup competition is over in one season. Skill is important, and can be affected

by training, Fitness can be affected by both training, and the use of the Physio.

The overall team performance is affected by a combination of ratings, which group together to

give a percentage efficiency (EFF), e.g. the formation selected, team morale, home advantage

etc.

The features available to help you on the squad screen are as follows:

FORMATION It is very important that you ensure that your team is in the correct formation before

you play a match, as once the match has kicked off, any player out of position will become

disillusioned, and his skill will suffer as a result. This effect is permanent. However, a

substitute brought on at halftime can be played out of position without penalty. The formations

you can choose from are as follows: 4-3-3, 4-2-4, 4-4-2, 5-3-2. In order to adhere to (for

example) 4-3-3, you must have a Goalkeeper in position 1, Defenders in positions 2,3,4,5,

Midfielders in positions 6,7,8, and Attackers in positions 9,10,11. For other formations, always

have a goalkeeper at no 1, and use the first number of the formation for defence, and so on.

NEXT This is followed by the week number. You have four weeks between each round of the cup

(Two if your next game is a replay), and each week you can select a mode of training and call

your physio in to treat injuries etc. If you use both in any week, the week number will move on

automatically, but if you choose to use only one (or neither) of these during the week, then

you must select NEXT to move the week on. When you have completed your work at the end of week

4, select MENU to play the game.

TRAINING There are five different types of training available to you each week; the tougher you

train your players, the more their skill is likely to increase, but the likelihood of injury

will also be greater. Remember, you only have four weeks to get your team fit for the next

match!

PHYSIO This chap is quite good with injured players, and can also give a welcome fitness boost.

PENALTIES In case of a penalty being awarded, you will need to nominate a penalty taker. The

computer will suggest one, but you can change as often as you wish.

SWAP Allows you to move players around in the team and reserves by exchanging places of any two

players at a time.

EDIT If you are unhappy with our choice of players names, you may change them with this option.

Select any of these by pressing the appropriate highlighted letter.

After selecting the PLAY option, you will be asked to wait for a few moments, while the draw is

made, then your opponents for the next round will be shown, with their league status (division),

team statistics, and usual tactics. At this point you can return to the squad screen for any

last-minute changes, final training etc, or you can go ahead and play the match.

Selecting CONTINUE puts you in the dressing room with the team, and you are able to give a

"pre-match chat"; i.e. you can select from a range of tactics. It is up to you as manager to

observe the effects these tactics have on the game, and against the various tactics employed by

your opponents. You are given the opportunity to change things at half-time (by selecting SQUAD)

if you feel it is necessary. The match commentary should give you some idea of the sort of

effect the tactics of the two teams are having, but bear in mind that other things are also

taken into account, such as the skill and fitness of the players, the division they play in,

and even the "Giant-killing" syndrome that so often provides shocks in real football.

A Draw after 90 minutes puts you in a replay situation; the venue for the game is reversed, and

you are given two more weeks to prepare your team.

If you have the misfortune to be knocked out in the third round (i.e. the first game), you are

sportingly offered the managerial post at a club still in the tournament. This, however, is your

last chance - fail with this team, and you must start again in another competition. Unlike real

football though, you don’t have to wait a year for another try!

PLEASE NOTE Features listed are for Spectrum version; some features may not be available on

other versions.
