SINCLAIR QL CONVERSION
============================================

- RELEASE 2026 -

An unofficial conversion of the puzzle-platform
classic for the Sinclair QL computer

============================================================================
BACKGROUND
============================================================================

Lemmings was originally released in February 1991 by DMA Design (Dundee,
Scotland) and published by Psygnosis. Conceived by lead artist Mike
Dailly during a tool-test for a Walker game animation, the prototype
quickly grew into one of the most influential puzzle games ever made,
going on to sell over 20 million copies across more than twenty
platforms.

The premise is simple but the gameplay is endless: a steady stream of
green-haired lemmings drops from a trap-door and walks blindly towards
doom unless you intervene. Armed with eight skill assignments -
climber, floater, bomber, blocker, builder, basher, miner, digger -
you must guide enough of them safely to the exit before the timer
runs out.

The original game spans 120 hand-crafted levels across four difficulty
ratings (Fun, Tricky, Taxing, Mayhem), each with its own skill mix,
timer, and lemming target. Codes are issued for every level after
the starter (Fun 1) so progress can be resumed across sessions.

SINCLAIR QL VERSION
============================================================================

QL CONVERSION .................. Jim McKay

This conversion is a ground-up rewrite that brings the complete original
Lemmings experience to the Sinclair QL, faithfully recreating the look,
feel, and gameplay of the 1991 release. The engine, level logic, sprite
pipeline, and audio driver are all native 68000 code optimised to
achieve the lemming experience on a standard QL available in 1984

Features:

* All 120 original levels (116 originals + 4 QL-exclusive specialties,
one new authored level per difficulty rating)
* All Lemmings game mechanics preserved (Traps, one way terrain,
indestructible "steel" terrain etc).
* Full 8-skill assignment with keyboard shortcuts (1..8)
* Mode 8 (256x256, 8 colour) rendering at 10fps
* QSound Music + IPC sound effects
* Direct QIMSI mouse polling path optimised for base QL hardware
* Standard Pointer Environment fallback for non-QIMSI hosts
* Save-progress per rating across sessions

SUPPORTED HARDWARE
============================================================================

The QL conversion auto-detects five hardware configurations at boot and
picks the best available mouse and audio backends.

QIMSI (Optimised hardware target for base QL)
-----------------------------
PS/2 mouse via the QIMSI direct interface. Mouse poll runs directly off
the memory-mapped status register, bypassing QDOS traps entirely for
minimum latency. Recommended over the Pointer Environment when
QIMSI is present to maximise base QL performance. Pairs naturally with
QSound for audio.

QIMSI GOLD
------------------------
Full hardware support: PS/2 mouse via the QIMSI direct interface AND
experimental AY-3-8910 audio via the on-board sound chip. Mouse and audio
both auto-detect.

PiStorm
------------------------
Full hardware support: Support for AY-3-8910 audio via the on-board sound
chip emulation, auto detected at boot.

POINTER ENVIRONMENT (general mouse support)
-------------------------------------
For systems without QIMSI hardware, the loader falls back to ptr_gen,
pointer driver. This works on any QL configuration with PE-compatible
hardware (Trump Card, Super Gold Card, QPC, emulators with PE drivers,
etc.). Mouse events arrive via standard QDOS IOP traps.

QSOUND
------
QSound AY-3-8910 support, detected at boot via the QDOS system-vars QSound
ROM pointer. Music periods are scaled to the QSound clock (x3/8); SFX uses
IPC beeper to effectively obtain an additional audio channel. Works
alongside any mouse backend (QIMSI or PE).</pre>
