Shanghaiis a solitaire puzzle game utilizing mahjong tiles. The gameplay is based on the original design by Brodie Lockard, first published by Activision in 1986. This version is a conversion of the SAM Coupe release, written by Frantisek Fuka (Fuxoft) in 1990, adapted for the ZX Spectrum 48K/128K with MB03+ interface or the eLeMeNt ZX computer using the esxDOS operating system.
The objective is to remove all 144 tiles from the table by finding matching pairs. Only tiles that are free on at least one horizontal side and have no other tile on top can be selected. Flower tiles can make pairs with each other, as can season tiles. Several tile layouts are available, including the classic "turtle" pattern, flat, three rows, and four heaps.
The game features HGFX color graphics and music for the Philips SAA 1099 sound chip. Functional differences from the SAM Coupe version include changes in menu access, additional control options, game saving/loading to SD card, and customizable background color sets. Layout selection, move undo options, and position saving/loading are accessible via the menu.
